Why Coax Techs Need Fiber Test Basics
You will open node cabinets, verify patch integrity, and decide whether an outage is optical or coax. Wrong escalation wastes hours; wrong local 'fix' damages ferrules.
Fiber testing at field level is binary: connectors clean, power in budget, continuity to next element—or escalate with documented readings.
Clean-and-verify procedure
- 1Cap adjacent ports; wear laser safety PPE if environment requires
- 2Remove dust cap; inspect ferrule with microscope/video probe
- 3Clean with lint-free wipe (single direction) — dry clean first; wet if procedure allows
- 4Re-inspect; repeat once if particle remains; escalate if scratch in core
- 5Mate matching connector type only (APC/APC, UPC/UPC)
- 6Measure power if authorized; re-cap unused ports immediately
Invisible IR laser can damage retina. Use power meter or video inspection only. Treat unmarked fiber as live until proven dark per procedure.
Optical Power Meter
Optical power meter measures received dBm at calibrated wavelength (1310, 1550 nm, etc.). Set meter λ to match source under test—wrong wavelength setting gives meaningless dB.
Connect via matching patch cord (same polish type). Reference connector on meter must be clean. Compare reading to engineering window on port label or job print.
Optical test equipment roles

- Absolute dBm at receiver — primary field acceptance for tech-level access

- Known transmit for continuity, polarity, loopback — paired with meter at far end
